2015 to see waterproof phones in the low to mid-range price level

With certain high-end smartphones coming to market with protection from water, one of the big themes for next year will be for manufacturers to offer that same protection to low and mid-range models. The Sony Xperia Z wowed the crowd at CES in 2013 by continually getting dunked into a tank of water. This year, top-shelf handsets like the Samsung Galaxy S5,Sony Xperia Z2 and the upcoming LG G3 will all be able to withstand submersion in up to 3.2 feet of water for as long as 30 minutes.

While Sony's mid-range waterproof phones are now priced in the $400 to $500 area, the Japanese manufacturer is said to be working with component suppliers to bring the price down on waterproof parts. The source who contributed that information, also mentioned that companies like Samsung, HTC, Motorola and Lenovo are planning on capitalizing on the popularity of the feature by expanding the number of models that will carry it. Also interested in adding waterproofing to low to mid-range models are the Taiwan based ODM.

With smartphones now seen in everyone's hands at all times, having a waterproof handset not only means that the device can be used in the shower or bath, but that the phone can live even after being dropped in the toilet, or after a glass of water is spilled all over it.
