Advanced technology: This new Samsung SM-T2558

Samsung is getting ready to introduce a rather odd device called SM-T2558. If you look at the pictures showing it, you’ll probably think that the SM-T2558 is a smartphone. However, the device features a 7-inch display, measures 191.24 x 99.7 x 8.95 mm, and weighs 245 grams. These attributes make it a tablet, not a smartphone. Of course, we could also call the SM-T2558 a phablet, since it appears that it can make voice calls.

Whatever it is, the Samsung SM-T2558 is certainly an unusual product. If you compare it to Samsung’s other 7-inch tablets (like theGalaxy Tab 4 7.0 SM-T230, or the Galaxy Tab 3 7.0 SM-T210 from last year), it’s definitely narrower, while also being taller.

The SM-T2558 was approved by Chinese authorities earlier this month, and seems to be made for China Mobile. It runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, while its 7-inch display has a 720 x 1280 pixel resolution. Other features include TD-LTE and TD-SCDMA connectivity, an 8MP rear camera, 2MP front-facing camera, quad-core 1.2GHz processor of unknown provenience, 1.5GB of RAM, and microSD card support (up to 128GB).

Although the SM-T2558 is made for China Mobile (which will likely start selling it soon), it doesn’t mean that Samsung can’t make a similar device for other markets. But the question is: do we want it to?

For the sake of comparison, we quickly put the 5.1-inch Galaxy S5 (142 x 72.5 x 8.1 mm) next to the SM-T2558 - so you can make an idea of how big this thing is. You'll see this in the last image included in the slideshow below.
